WELCOME and Thank you for visiting!

Expat Psychotherapist in Malta

Are you an expat looking for a therapist who can support you cope with the challenges and uncertainty of adapting to the life in a new country? As an expat living for over 15 years outside my native country, I am passionate about helping people with expat/international backgrounds overcome the common challenges of relocation. The experience of being an expat has been an important part in my growth as a psychotherapist, and expatriate issues are one of my specialties.

My name is Aida, and I am a warranted Gestalt psychotherapist. I am also trained in Level 1 Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. In addition to my formal training in psychotherapy and IFS, I am a certified yoga teacher, as I fell in love with the ways in which yoga can support the body-mind healing.

Relocating and moving away from family and friends can be hard. Living away from home can feel lonely, and finding a place to live, work, and build friendships can be challenging. This sense of loneliness is normal and okay in such circumstances, but you don’t need to face it alone.

At Expat Therapy, my mission is to offer psychotherapy sessions to expats living in Malta or other countries. I want to provide you an understanding, safe and compassionate place to share and explore your experience with moving and settling abroad, as well as the excitement and possibilities of the expat life. If you need someone to talk to, I am here to offer the support you need.

About me

My Approach

Generally my sessions are based on Gestalt therapy and Internal Family System (IFS) Parts Work, blending in elements such as:

  • intercultural therapy
  • trauma informed theories
  • somatic awareness work
  • theories for restoring the nervous system regulation through polyvagal-informed education
  • neuroscience
  • intergenerational trauma (family constellations)
  • theories for understanding relationships
  • yoga for mental health
  • therapeutic writing
I can tailor an approach that suits your unique needs, ensuring that you feel accepted, understood and supported.

More about Gestalt and Internal Family Systems

Gestalt psychotherapy can be particularly helpful during times of personal difficulty. It supports your growth and empowerment, and achievement of greater self-awareness “in the here and now”, and it can also support you in making sense of the expat life by looking at it from different angles.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) can help you become more aware of your inner world, working in depth to release trauma or inner conflicts within your internal family system of parts by accessing your Self towards inner harmony, self-compassion, self-leadership and personal growth.

yOGA for MENTAL HEALTH

As a certified yoga teacher I offer one-to-one mental health aware yoga classes, as well as group sessions of yoga and meditation for mental health for my clients as an extension of therapy, and to people who wish to destress, relax and learn to listen to their bodies. Yoga and meditation are amazing ways to exercise in a mindful way, live in the “here and now” and empower ourselves. The yoga exercises integrated in my therapy sessions supports the somatic part of the therapeutic work.

As a psychotherapist and yoga teacher, in my work I combine these two passions to help my clients build mental resilience and inner strength, ground in the present moment, enhance mental clarity and improve the overall well-being through physical activity.

At the moment, I hold yoga classes for self-love and self-empowerment at Momosyoga studio in Mosta (https://www.hotyogamalta.com/schedule), as well as one-to-one sessions in various venues around Malta.

For the group yoga sessions, there should be at least 3 participants for an event to happen.
Yoga For Mental Halth

You can help lots of people by
helping yourself first

What is a session like?

During our first meeting, you can share about yourself and your story. It will be a free of charge online assessment session which will last 30 minutes. This will be an opportunity to identify what your concerns are, whether or not Gestalt therapy could help you work through your difficulties or whether another service might be more suitable. We will also discuss any of your goals and what you would like from therapy. Then, you will decide whether you would like to continue on this therapeutic journey. If after our first meeting you decide that you would like to continue, we then decide on the regularity of sessions according to your needs.

In regular sessions, of an hour in duration, you can bring a particular topic or we’ll continue exploring any underlying issues. Together we will find ways of coping, and will work towards agreed goals.

The sessions are held online (from the comfort of your home), or face-to-face (in a clinic).
